Our family company has been trading internationally for over 60 years. R.C. Macdonald Ltd has become a recognised name in New Zealand, synonymous with industry-leading innovation.

1951

Ron Macdonald founded Industrial Metals Ltd and began processing scrap metals in New Zealand.

1953

R.C. Macdonald Ltd was formed. This company co-founded Pacific Steel Ltd in 1958, with New Zealand’s first steel production commencing in 1962.

In 1972 R.C. Macdonald Ltd won the NZ Export Award for outstanding contribution to New Zealand trade. It was the first time a non-manufacturing company had been awarded this high honour.

1976

Ron Macdonald was the first New Zealander appointed as International President of the five-nation Pacific Basin Economic Council, a board responsible for promoting trade between Asian and Pacific countries.

1977

R.C. Macdonald Ltd formed a joint venture to explore fishing potential in New Zealand waters with the vessel “Wesermunde”, previously only fished by foreign companies. This venture pioneered new processing technology and trained New Zealand fishermen. It is credited with the discovery Orange Roughy in 1980.

1979

R.C. Macdonald Ltd as agent for Capital Plant International Ltd won the contract to supply the Ammonia-Urea Plant in Taranaki, The Kāpuni plant still operates today, and is New Zealand’s first and only Ammonia-Urea plant.

1980

R C Macdonald Ltd as agent for Alberta Gas Chemicals Ltd won the contract to supply the Motonui Methanol plant, also in Taranaki. At the time of construction it was the largest of its kind in the world.

In the same year R C Macdonald Ltd won the tender to supply the Newell car shredder to Pacific Steel Ltd.

1990s

As one of the industry pioneers, R.C. Macdonald Ltd narrowed its focus to the speciality of trading steel.

Today

We’re a third generation family company stocking, trading and distributing Steel, Stainless Sheet, Tin Plate and other speciality products in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

Our reputation is and always has been based on credibility, innovation quality and reliability. This has resulted in us supplying major infrastructure and building projects across New Zealand and Australia, including: Melbourne Eastlink Project, Newmarket Viaduct, Tauranga Harbour Bridge, Victoria Tunnel, South Western Motorway, Te Papa Tongarewa.
